2021 HALLOWEEN TOURNAMENT

Tokyo Bilingual Chess Club's Halloween Scholastic Tournament held on October 16, 2021 was small but fun!  TBCC had a special guest, WCM Natsumi Kojima, who was a representative of the Japan Female Chess Team for the Chess Olympiads held in Baku in 2016 and Batumi in 2018.  Natsumi explained tournament rules and regulations prior to rounds, including how to use a chess clock as it is part of the game.

There were 11 brave souls, that came out during our Halloween Haunt from at least 8 schools. This is one of the best tournaments since all kids dress up in their Halloween costumes! Although many people believe that chess is just a game, there are many scientific and artistic applications that the game has to offer. Halloween lends itself perfectly to the artistic elements of the game. Children played five rounds showing fine sportsmanship as well as fine ability.

The Tournament Director, CM Jakhongir Shavdirov,  made the pairings each round and settled any type of dispute that arose during the game. We could not hold this Halloween chess tournament without him!

We had two sections and the winners were:

Class A: Kai Tatsumi with 5.0/5.0

Class A: Shota Osaka with 4.0/5.0

Class A: Lira Yoshida with 3.0/5.0

Class B: Petru Argesanu with 5.0/5.0

Class B: Eito Nishida with 4.0/5.0

Class A: Yuzu Yoshida with 2.0/5.0

What would our Halloween Tournament be without a costume contest? Kids and teachers dressed up with the spooky costumes and Stella Imasaka dressed as a cute monster won the best costume prize!

A huge THANK YOU to WCM Emi Hasegawa, who was also a representative of the Japan Female Chess Team for the Olympiads in Istanbul in 2012 and Tromso in 2014, for great photos she has taken for all of us.

Thank you to all who came out to and participated the Halloween Chess Tournament.

Stay tuned for the X'mas Tournament in December!
